Can a tow company unlock your car?

Yes. Many tow companies, including PS Towing & Recovery, open locked cars as part of roadside service. Ours is $75 plus $3 a mile for the drive to you, 24/7. Here's how it works and what to have ready.

First: is anyone locked inside?

If a child, a vulnerable adult or a pet is inside the car, call 911 right away. A closed car heats up fast in summer and gets dangerously cold in winter. Emergency crews can act faster than anyone else.

How lockout service works

A trained driver uses tools made for opening vehicles without damage, working through the door seal to reach the lock or the handle from inside. It doesn't involve breaking glass or forcing the lock. Most lockouts are a short job once the truck is there.

What you'll need to show

Before we open a car, we ask for proof that it's yours or that you're allowed to drive it: a photo ID that matches the registration, or the registration or insurance card once the car is open. That check protects you. A company that opens any car for anyone isn't doing you a favor.

Common lockout situations

  • Keys on the seat: the classic. Usually a quick open.
  • Keys in the trunk: many cars have a trunk release inside the cabin or on the driver's door, so opening the door is often enough.
  • Push-button start with the fob inside: many cars try to stop this from happening, but it still does, especially if the fob battery is weak.
  • Dead key fob: most fobs have a physical key blade hidden inside. Slide the release and try the door lock before you call.
  • Dead car battery: power locks won't respond. Use the hidden key blade. If the car then won't start, you need a jump start too.
  • Rental car: call the rental company's roadside line first; your agreement may cover it.

Lost keys are different

If the keys are gone, not just locked inside, opening the door won't get you home. Modern keys need to be cut and programmed, which is a dealer or locksmith job. We can tow the car to them: $120 plus $8 a mile.

Cars that need extra care

Tell dispatch if your car has frameless windows (the glass drops slightly when you open the door), an unusual lock system, or aftermarket alarms. That helps the driver plan the safest way in.

What it costs

Our car lockout service is $75 plus $3 a mile for the drive to you, so a lockout 10 miles away is $105. Call (414) 254-1468, 24/7.
